April is a co-founder of Sister Warriors Freedom Coalition and a fierce policy leader. As a Sister Warrior, April’s work and vision are fueled by her own experiences navigating systems and rising despite incredible challenges.
She has dedicated her political work to shine a light on how girls and women of color are disproportionately criminalized, especially when they are survivors of violence or involved in the foster care system. She has also led the ballot measures to end mass incarceration as a form of modern-day slavery.
April is just getting started, yet she’s had great achievements in changing California policy. Her policy wins include: ACA 6 (2020), AB 124 (2021), AB 2761 (2022), AB 2417 (2022), and ACA 8 (2024), AB 2740, and SB 1069 (2024)
April has helped improve conditions for incarcerated people and has fought for pathways to bring more people home and ultimately end the criminalization of our communities.
