June Updates

Dear Sister Warriors,

As we move into a powerful season of reflection, celebration, and action, we are reminded that our communities have always been the driving force behind change. This month, we stand at the intersection of three important moments: California’s Primary Elections, Pride season, and Juneteenth. The common threads carried through all of these are the ongoing fights for freedom, dignity, representation, and self-determination for our communities.

The holidays we uplift and celebrate in June, such as Pride and Juneteenth, were not simply awarded to us by the government,; but won through courage and sacrifice.

The same is true of our right to vote. Many of us Sister Warriors do not maintain the right to vote in this country due to our incarceration and immigration status. For those of us who do, it is critical that we exercise this right. Voting is certainly not the only way to make our voices be heard or to realize the freedom dreams we hold for ourselves and our folks,- but our communities fought too hard for access to the ballot for us to sit this election out.

Local elections shape our everyday lives, from housing and healthcare to schools, public safety, and reentry resources. The decisions made by elected officials impact our families, our neighborhoods, and our futures. When we vote, we honor those who came before us, and we continue the work of building the power our communities deserve.

On election day, June 2nd, use your voice. Use your power. Make a plan to vote in the California Primary elections.

Check your registration, know your polling place, and bring your people with you to the polls. Every vote cast is a declaration that our communities will not be ignored and that our voices cannot be silenced or diminished.

As we celebrate Pride and commemorate Juneteenth, let us remember that freedom is not only something we honor, but also something we must actively protect and expand.

In Community,

April Grayson
